Volunteer Work: Dana (Selfless giving) Volunteer work is our expression of dana. This selfless giving is a reflection of our gratitude to Amida Buddha. When you volunteer your time, you enable us to celebrate special Buddhist services, share Japanese American culture, maintain the Temple, serve the wider community, and develop a bond between Temple members. There are many ways in which you can contribute your time. A. Dharma School We have been very fortunate in having a very active and growing Dharma School program. The Dharma School is staffed by volunteer teachers and a superintendent. The Dharma School runs from September to June, following the academic school year of many of our students. Classes run from preschool to an adult study class. The Dharma School has a variety of activities where they need volunteers. Please ask any of the teachers or Hirano Sensei for areas where you can help. B. Toban The Toban is a way to spread the work of the Temple among its members. We have divided the membership of our temple into Toban groups. The Toban is usually divided up into a monthly schedule. These groups volunteer to clean the temple, such as cleaning and mopping the various parts of the temple. Some of the Toban members also help with the yard work and general upkeep of the temple. We encourage you to help your Toban group. This Toban system has saved the temple thousands of dollars in janitorial and gardening fees. C. Organizational Activities Although each member is eligible for serving on the Temple board, each of the organizations such as the Fujinkai and Y.B.A. also requires leaders. The time and effort necessary can be quite extensive in running our temple and the various affiliated organizations. We are constantly looking for volunteers for a variety of activities. Our temple's major fund raisers, such as the Obon festival and Food Bazaar, require hundreds of volunteer hours of work. Please take an active role in these various activities -- it benefits yourself as well as the temple and Sangha.
