Temple Purpose
The Salt Lake Buddhist Temple's Board of Directors
outlined three major areas for our temple. These areas can be divided
into Education, Community, and Finance. If you value Jodo Shinshu
and our Salt Lake Buddhist Temple, please do your best in supporting
each of the temple's goals of Education, Community and Finance.
Education
We are dedicated to providing information and guidance about Jodo
Shinshu Buddhism to those desirous of learning. This includes members,
guests, and the public.
Community
Our temple is a vibrant center for the Japanese American
community. However, first and foremost, the temple is a place
for our Jodo Shinshu Sangha (fellowship of Buddhists) to
gather. We hope to develop this feeling of Sangha, by providing
a variety of activities and experiences for our members.
These activities run throughout the year, from our Dharma
School's Hanamatsuri program, to our Fujinkai and YBA activities.
Although the Sangha has been the foundation of our temple,
the entire Japanese American Community of Salt Lake City
has supported our endeavors. Therefore, the temple also provides
a gathering place for the Japanese American community at
large, by the hosting of Issei center events or allowing
the temple to be used as a facility for a variety of larger
community activities. Those of us who have spent time within
the Salt Lake Valley, realize that in many aspects, the LDS
church dominates a great deal of the religious and cultural
environment. Our temple provides a viable alternative to
those who may have a differing view of the world. Our Temple
will continue to serve the entire Salt Lake community as
a hope to serve as a Religious and Cultural Bridge for understanding.
- Finance
-
- The Salt Lake Buddhist Temple is fortunate to have its financial
affairs managed by committed volunteers who serve on the Board
of Directors. These Temple members, who are elected to two year
terms, have ensured the Temple's financial health for many years.
Our Temple has grown over the past few years and has put us in
a very difficult yet positive position. We are in the process
of building and funding a new temple structure. Although our
present membership dues and various donations received allow
us to continue the temple as is, the building of a new temple
will require an additional effort on the members of the temple
and hopefully the larger community. In additional to the yearly
membership and donations, we will be asking for pledges to our
building fund. Our Temple's goals are all interdependent of one
another.
